Londoners against Heathrow Airport expanding

According to poll results, residents from Hounslow, Richmond and Hillingdon are against the expansion of the airport.

Over 140,000 people voted in a four-week referendum regarding a third runway or more flights for the Heathrow Airport. More than 72%, meaning over 100,000 people expressed their concerns and they were opposed to another runway, while 73% were opposed to adding more flights.

The Mayor said that this is a sign for the Aviation Commission to rule out Heathrow expansion as a solution to the capacity crisis.

“We now know we have tens of thousands of people behind us in our fight to ensure there are no increases in the number of runways, flights, noise levels or pollution at Heathrow airport, all of which have a colossal impact on the quality of life of our residents.” leader of Richmond council added. He also said that this is not an adequate or a safe site for a massive airport.

The three London boroughs’ consultations came as a response to stop the plans that were being debated, after the government has set up an aviation commission to look into the country's future airport strategy. The report will be over in 2015.

A recent report by the House of Commons Transport Committee also showed that these plans can lead to Heathrow airport being closed.
